Shiatsu: an art of healing

The shiatsu touch

Shiatsu is an old, traditional, Japanese healing art. It is very different to Western massage, where kneading and friction is used. Shiatsu uses pressure and stretching to create a general sense of well-being, both physically and mentally.

In fact, shiatsu literally means 'finger pressure'. Using fingers, thumbs but also knuckles, elbows knees and feet, shiatsu works on the acupuncture points in the body along along the body’s meridians or energy channels. This helps to restore the flow of energy and strengthen the vital organs in the body.

In shiatsu, it is believed that diseases are the result of blocked or unbalanced energy within the body. Similar to Chinese medicine, the human body is seen as being governed by the forces of Yin and Yang and the five elements.

What are the benefits?

Shiatsu sessions bring about deep relaxation and have a deep calming affect. This alone improves the self-healing capabilities of one's body.

Among the more general benefits, a shiatsu treatment helps to release tension and stress and will relax body and mind. Physically, it improves posture, circulation and breathing.

A large number of specific conditions can be treated by applying shiatsu such as back and joint pains, head aches, migraines, injuries and neck stiffness, menstrual problems, digestive disorders, and more. The best results, of course, are achieved by combining repeated shiatsu sessions with a wholesome diet and a healthy way of life.

On the futon

A shiatsu treatment takes place with the patient lying on a mat called 'futon'. The practitioner uses his fingers, thumbs but sometimes also hands, elbows, knees and feet to work on balancing the meridians. He or she applies pressure to the appropriate points to correct injuries or imbalances.

Shiatsu works on the whole being, from the physical to the spiritual, so during and after the treatment a patient may experience a variety of reactions such as crying, laughing, joy or stillness. These reactions are a sign that the body is breaking through old energy patterns.
